Bites are a clue, not proof
Bed bug bites often appear in lines or clusters on skin exposed during sleep, but many people don't react at all, and other insects cause similar bites. Look for physical evidence before treating.
Where to look
Check mattress seams and tags, the box spring, the bed frame joints, the headboard, nightstands, couch cushions and seams, and baseboards near the bed. Use a flashlight and a card to sweep along seams.
What you're looking for
Small rust or black spots (droppings), tiny pale eggs, translucent shed skins and live bugs, which are flat, reddish brown and about the size of an apple seed.
If you find them
Don't move furniture or sleep in another room, which spreads them. Avoid foggers. Call for a professional inspection so treatment covers every affected area, with a follow-up timed to the egg cycle.
