Wasps & Stinging Insects

Wasps vs. Hornets: How to Tell the Difference

Paper wasps, yellow jackets and hornets look alike but nest very differently. Here's a quick guide.

Paper wasps

Long-legged, slender, brown with yellow markings. They build open, umbrella-shaped paper nests under eaves, railings and grills. Generally less aggressive unless the nest is disturbed.

Yellow jackets

Shorter, stocky, bright yellow and black. They build enclosed nests in the ground or in wall voids and are the most aggressive of the group in late summer.

Bald-faced hornets

Black and white, larger than yellow jackets. They build large, gray, football-shaped nests in trees, shrubs and on structures. Very defensive.

European hornets

Large, brown and yellow, and often active at night around lights. They nest in hollow trees and wall voids.
