How to Tell If You Have German Cockroaches

Small, tan, two dark stripes, and almost always in the kitchen. Here's how to identify German roaches and what to do.

Identification

German cockroaches are about half an inch long, light brown or tan, with two dark parallel stripes behind the head. They are the most common indoor cockroach in Michigan.

Where they hide

Behind and under refrigerators, dishwashers and stoves, in cabinet hinges, under sinks, inside microwaves and coffee makers, and in bathroom vanities.

Signs of an infestation

Pepper-like droppings in corners and hinges, brown egg cases, a musty odor, and roaches seen during the day, which usually means a large population.

Don't fog

Foggers and repellent sprays scatter German roaches into walls and other rooms. Professional gel baits and growth regulators placed in cracks are far more effective.
